Here’s the first of the race reports from last weekend. Written by top duathlon series organiser and Club Welfare Officer, Paul McKenny:
The day started with a quick recce of the bike course at 7 am to check if it was still possible to ride without a wetsuit due to very heavy rain overnight !!!.. there were only half a dozen flooded parts on the course so things were looking good !!!.. the only worry was the ever increasing wind speed, which if forecasters were right was only going to get worse as the day went on.
The race briefing was carried out under ever darkening clouds and it looked as though the brave souls who had come to race and our volunteer race marshals and timekeepers were going to be in for a challenging morning..
9:00 AM… RACE START…
It was a great feeling to be one of 10 people lined up to start our clubs first ever event, a great achievement from all concerned, considering we have only been in existence for 3 months..
3 athletes set off on the first 5k run at a fast pace so realising very quickly I couldn`t match it I settled in to a much steadier pace, It was an out and back course so we could assess our position in the field as the run went on.
There was great support from everyone at transition and after emptying rainwater out of our cycling shoes we set off on our bike leg !!
The bike section of the race was very challenging to say the least with very strong winds and squally rain showers which made the outward journey to Rampside roundabout a real battle and it was only the thought of a fast return leg that kept the spirits high.. after negotiating the floods at seawood it was a race to T2 for the 2nd run..
Again fantastic support from all at transition who had also braved the weather and again it was on with soggy running shoes for the final run which thankfully was run in more bearable conditions..
All in all it was a very successful first race for our new club and thanks must go to everyone who have made this possible.. huge thank you to athletes for supporting the event , marshals and timekeepers for braving horrible weather conditions..none of this would happen without your help so it`s onwards and upwards for Ulverston Tri Club ..
Next race Sunday 24th November
