IMUK Sunday 20th July 2014..
After competing at IMUK for the last few years Janet and I decided to go back to Bolton as supporters and spectators, to cheer on our UTC athletes taking part this year… and what a great experience it was..
We decided to stay overnight in the Bolton area so that our day didn’t start as early as the athletes, but we were on our way to Pennington Flash at 5-15 am to catch the swim start, which has always been a sight I had wanted to see. When you are part of the race you really don’t appreciate the spectacle of 2000 athletes in the water, it was an amazing sight.
After seeing all our guys exit the Flash after their first lap and safely back in for their second we rushed off down the road to get the club banner up, and cowbells in hand got ready to cheer on the athletes out on to the bike leg..
All our UTC’ers had great swim and T1 splits and it was cool to see them on their bikes so close together with smiles on their faces ..
It was then back into the car for the mad dash to sheephouse lane to catch the guys on the bike leg. this journey resembled Wacky races due to the road closures, as every other spectator seemed to have the same idea !!!
The climb up Sheephouse is a great place to watch the bike action as it has a Tour de France feel about it with narrow road and massive crowds cheering on the athletes, and again our guys looked really strong as they tackled the climb for the second time.. awesome stuff.
After joining the run route at the corner at the top of the hill coming out of town we realised how hot it had become, which was having a dramatic effect on some of the runners, it must have been really tough conditions, but all our guys handled this really well which is a credit to their mental and physical strength.
The run loop is really good for spectators as you get to see your athletes several times though I suspect the runners will see it slightly different !! ..
The sight of the UTC Tri suit all around the marathon course was fantastic .. You did yourselves and our club proud
So after a long day at the office UTC has added some more Ironmen to our ranks..
Well done to each and every one of you ..it was a privilege to share your experience and you should be proud to call yourselves.. IRONMAN..
