With the normal track sessions on hold with the College closed over the summer, it makes sense to run the session back in Ulverston for the next 5 weeks until it re-opens.
The sessions will stay at 7pm start time, meeting at the Leisure Centre.
If anyone can’t make it, the training sessions can be provided if you wanted to do the same set as everyone else in your own time/place. Just let Josh know and we’ll get it sorted.
A fantastic effort from all the athletes who took part in our first club triathlon of the year. It was great to have so many guests from outside the club taking part, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back in August for the Lakeland Ladies tri, and in September for a repeat of yesterday’s event.
Results are shown below (courtesy of our spangly new timing equipment!), with some storming performances, including the very many who completed their first triathlon. Great effort all.
2016 Tri 1 results (summary)
Where: Meet at Ulverston Leisure Centre
When: Sunday 5th June, 9.00am.
We all like cycling and we all like cake… so we thought it was time to put those two joyous things together again and go for a CAKE RIDE!
This is a social ride for all members, with the aim of getting some gentle miles in the legs.
Riders of all abilities are very welcome – as it’s a social ride it’ll be a very relaxed affair!
The plan will probably be to head to the Bluebird café at Coniston – there’ll be a shorter and a longer route so you can either head back after the café stop or carry on further if you’re feeling adventurous (or high on cake).
It’s a week before Leeds and two weeks before Lakesman so if you’re competing it’ll be a good taper.
See you there!
Hallo all. The coached open water swim sessions that we had last year with Christine Johnson will be starting up again next Monday (the 23rd) for UTC members. The sessions are at Fell Foot starting at 6.30pm and it’s £5 per session – just pay Christine on the night. You’ll need a wetsuit, goggles and a coloured swim cap so you’re easy to spot in the water. These sessions were well attended last year by peeps of all abilities as you get the benefits of coaching, but they’re particularly good if you’re new to open water and want to build your confidence up.
We can only keep these sessions going if enough people turn up though, so make sure you come along if you want to see them continue!
**Volunteers needed** Every week we’ll need a volunteer to provide water safety – but instead of keeping watch from the bank like last year, this time you’ll get to paddle round on a kayak. Win! (It’s pretty straightforward and Christine will brief you on what to do). So please let us know if you’d like to volunteer.
Further to Alex’s note the other week, we’re very pleased to announce that our lovely shiny new Summer Tri’s are now open for business!
Our first event on 26th June is being held in conjunction with the Go for Jo Charity campaign that many of you will be aware of. This and the 11th September event both have long, short and relay options available. We’re also very happy to confirm the return of the Lakeland Ladies Tri on 14th August, which is sprint distance for solo and relay options.
Full details and entry information can be found here:
Tri 1: 26th June Entry
Lakeland Ladies Tri
Tri 2: 11th September Entry
As part of your annual membership fee, UTC members will receive a £5 discount on the entry fee for each of these events – to use when entering the race. We’ll be sending the discount code out via email to the address used when you signed up, so keep your eyes peeled…

Gameon Spring 2016 Final
Chairman Chris has been giving it some schmooze with the lovely Sharon at Topmark Cycles and they’ve arranged a private UTC bike maintenance session to run through all those tricky bike jobs we don’t know how to do or perhaps didn’t even know needed doing. There’s also the opportunity to discuss getting a proper bike fitting sorted and get some nicely discounted gear, because everyone loves UTC, right?
It needn’t be this hard…
There’ll be time spent on helping those of us who are newer to cycling and bike maintenance, and plenty of opportunity to cover more advanced questions and to ensure everyone’s steed is safe and running efficiently as we enter the new cycling season.
It’s being held at their shop/workshop so numbers are strictly limited to 20 – first come first served. Booking is via the UTC Facebook page, but if you’re not on FB, just drop us a line on firstname.lastname@example.org and we’ll get your name on the list.
- Monday 21st March
- 17.15-19.00 pm
- Topmark Cycles, 108 Greengate St, Barrow-in-Furness, LA14 1BG
Unlike some of the other Monday night events we’ve done, this will be more of a drop in session and not a talk, so if you have a specific bike question, shout it out on the night so everyone can share the knowledge!
Alternatively, if there’s anything you would just like to learn about there’ll be plenty of opportunity to ask. This way we’ll have a range of issues to cover and others can picks up tips at the same time. So this could be anything from clunky gears & adjusting derailleurs; replacing a chain or cassette; brakes/disc brake adjustment; tyre wear and replacement; basic bike health checks, etc.
Time for a new one maybe?
There’s also the normal UTC 10% discount on any goodies you might wish to purchase whilst in store.
Also, because she’s lovely – she’s also managed to sort out £10 off the normal £75 bike fit price if you book on night!!
See you there.
Dates for the 2016 UTC triathlons have been decided on – exciting times! Make sure you get them in your diary:
UTC Sprint 1 – 26th June
UTC Lakeland Ladies – 14th August
UTC Sprint 2 – 11th September
After the success of these events last year, we’re hoping to make them even bigger and better this time around. Entries aren’t open just yet, but they will be soon – we’ll let you know when. Hope to see as many of you entered as possible – it’s gonna be good. Game on!
When? Monday 18th January, 7.30pm
Where? The Stan Laurel Inn, 31 The Ellers, LA12 0AB, Ulverston.
It’s January, so that means AGM time. This is your chance to hear all the UTC news and to get involved.
Some of the things we’ll be going over are the club’s plans for 2016, what’s being done about the responses to last years survey and there’ll also be a financial update.
You’ll be able to vote on who you want to see taking the club forward on the committee this year. We want you to have your say at the meeting – your views and feedback on the club are always welcomed and encouraged.
Also, if you’re thinking about joining the club, it’s a great opportunity to see what we’re all about and to meet some of the other members.
We need at least 25% of paid up members to attend the AGM, so please make an effort to get there – it’ll be worth your while. Especially as it’s at the pub.
Here’s the link to get membership if you haven’t already done so… https://www.sportsentrysolutions.co.uk/new_race_page.php?recordID=833
Circuits will start earlier for those of you who want to attend both.
See you there!
Some good news for you all on Christmas Eve – Lakes Leisure has spread some Christmas cheer our way by awarding UTC some very generous funding. This funding will allow us to buy timing equipment which will give us finish line instant stats and hopefully live race status/splits. This is a massive step forward for the club because it will enable us to open our events up to 50+ competitors.
In a nutshell, the funding will help UTC events become even bigger and even better – exciting!
Once we have it, we will be hiring the equipment out to other clubs in the local area – give us a shout if you know anyone who may be interested.
More details will follow in the new year, so keep an eye out!
Have a great Christmas everyone 🙂
